  1. I am a graduate student (master or doctorate). What transcripts should I attach to my application?

  1. I am a PhD student and have problem in including my undergraduate transcripts with the application. Can I still apply?

Please do the application with the transcripts that you have and explain your situation. Your application will be equally considered.

  1. I have a scholarship (MD / PhD / Post Doctoral, etc.) with a technical reserve. Can I request financial support to the organizing committee to participate or should I use my technical reserve?

Fellows with technical reserves, such as amount exclusively dedicated for research purposes, should target the resources of its technical reserves to participate in scientific meetings and can’t receive further aid. Check the information from your funding agency to see if you can use your technical reserves to attend this course and/or if you can receive financial support from any other source.

  1. What kind of project can I submit?

A summary of a research project is requested, to evaluate the importance of the applications of TEM techniques in the research of each candidate who develops as a whole. This serves for a comparative analysis and to select the candidates who needs or rely on TEM techniques to achieve the goals of their research. So, we do not ask for a specific aspect related to the application of TEM in the candidate’s research, but the project itself. For Brazilian students with scholarship, usually an abridged version of the submitted project to obtain funding is suitable. For applicants with “quotas scholarships” in postgraduate programs, an abridged version of the project submitted to postgraduate committee, to specify the project and advisor is suitable. For example, a student with a quota scholarship and work on a project related to solar cells must submit a condensed version of his/her advisor’s project specifying what is his/her role by including all the aspects of the research project and not just illustrating the use of TEM for the samples. In case of companies, the research project is related to the objectives of the research developed by the Research, Development and Innovation Department. We suggest the project be properly adapted to omit what is unnecessary but still leaving sufficient information to assess the need of TEM usage for the whole research. In short, the research project in which the professional or student acts and not a project for the use of equipment.

  1. Is the TEM school intended only for the academic community?

No.  Researchers working in Research, Development and Innovation Departments of private companies are also invited to apply.

  1. Where will be the accommodation organized for the participants? Can we use the CNPEM housing?

The hosting of participants is organized in a hotel where we suggest staying. A special rate for the group is negotiated. The hotel’s contact will be released as soon as possible. During the event, use of CNPEM housing is not possible. A bus shuttle between the hotel and CNPEM campus will be organized.

  1. What are the selection criteria?

The selection of participants will take into account the comparative analysis of submitted documents. The course will be open to people of various educational levels, from graduate students to researchers. Thus, the motivation of using TEM techniques at the present moment each applicant’s career will have a especial consideration.

  1. I will be attending the school. Should I need to bring any educational materials such as textbooks or handouts with me?

We recommend the participants to bring any educational materials on electron microscopy ((text/e) books, handouts, etc.) with them. We also recommend studying few basic concepts related to electron microscopy before attending the school for having a better follow-up with the lectures. The subjects are quite large and complex, involving different topics in Modern Physics, Crystallography, Geometrical Optics etc.
