The central research of Dr. Miguel Alcalde primarily focusses on the engineering of enzymes by directed evolution for a wide range of environmental, energy and industrial applications (www.miguelalcaldelab.eu). Dr. Alcalde is biologist by the Universidad Complutense de Madrid, Spain (1993) with M.Sc in Plant Physiology (1994). In 1999, he completed his PhD in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology and later he moved to Prof. F.H. Arnold’s group at CALTECH, USA, for his postdoctoral stay. In 2003, Dr. Alcalde returned to Spain to work as Ramon y Cajal Researcher at the Institute of Catalysis CSIC, where he was appointed as Staff Scientist (2007), promoted to CSIC Researcher (2014), and finally to full CSIC Professor (2019). Dr. Alcalde has been PI in 29 national and international projects (7 EU consecutive projects) and research contracts with several industries. Dr. Alcalde is coauthor of over 100 research papers and several filled patents. Among recent appointments, he is manager of the Spanish Agency of Research (AEI) and coordinator of the section of Synthetic Biology and Molecular Biotechnology of the Spanish Society of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology (SEBBM). In 2019, Dr. Alcalde founded EvoEnzyme (www.evoenzyme.com), a spin-off from the Institute of Catalysis CSIC.
