General Information

This School will focus on the fundamentals of SAXS data reduction and analysis as well as its applications to hierarchical systems.

Successful small-angle x-ray scattering (SAXS) experiment requires appropriate data reduction and analysis tools. Igor Pro based packages Nika (for SAXS data reduction) and Irena (for SAXS data analysis) were developed during the last 10 years at the APS. They are already being used widely for material science SAXS at the APS and at other facilities worldwide. These tools are commonly taught during "Beyond Rg" – SAXS short course organized semi-annually by APS SAXS SIG. However, the main audience of the SAXS short course is new SAXS users, starting with their own SAXS program and therefore it focuses more heavily on experiments, theory etc. The time devoted in this course for software is insufficient for experienced experimenters interested in complex software applications.

Therefore, the APS SAXS Special Interest Group (SIG) together with the ERX Group of LNLS are organizing this specialized, hands-on, school specifically on the SAXS software Nika and Irena. The school will be taught by the software author, Jan Ilavsky, APS staff member. In order to provide high educational value, the number of participants will be limited to 25. Participants are expected to have a reasonable level of SAXS experience and bring their own computers (Windows or OSX). In addition, they are encouraged to bring their own SAXS experimental results.

Applications are accepted from Oct 8 to Dec 7. See more.

The organizing committee from the 2nd School of SAXS Data Analysis has negotiated rates in some hotels located in Cambuí (Campinas downtown).

We have a limited number of rooms booked that is why we suggest you to contact the hotel as soon as possible.

Also, you can find attached the participants list and contact each other by email to request a double room in order to get a cheapest price. The hotel will not offer a double/twin or a triple room if you do not mention the names of the participants.

In order to use the discount for the daily rate, you must mention to the hotel that you are member of a course promoted by “CNPEM / LNLS”.

School dates

Feb 28 and Mar 1, 2013 (after the 2013 LNLS Users Meeting)

Thursday, Feb 28 morning/early afternoon: Installation of the Igor Pro and Irena and Nika packages on users’ computers, data reduction using Nika of example SAXS data including calibration, mask design, and necessary corrections. Examples of SAXS1 beamline data will be provided. Discussion and help with data reduction of users data will follow.

Thursday, Feb 28 afternoon/Friday, Mar 1: Data analysis using Irena (all steps necessary including import/export, modifications, and plotting of data). Presentation and hands-on education for use of Irena tools (unified fit, size distribution, modeling, analytical models, small-angle diffraction etc.). Explanation of advanced support tools such as scripting tool will be included. The lectures will be paced based on users’ progress, and time will be left for questions and answers, leaving users to "play" with the demonstration or their own data.

For both days:

  • Opening session: 8:15 a.m.

About Campinas

The city of Campinas, originally formed by a landing in the tracks of the Goiases Road, brings in its history a long trajectory of supplying and production of sugar and coffee, activities which added to the industry, services and technology generation, allowing the city to play a strategic role in the development of a broad region of the State of São Paulo.

Its ethnic, productive and technological diversities, presented in a varied roll of touristic attractives, urban and rural, allow us to discover an intense and rich cultural territory, in permanent transformation.

Campinas occupies an area of 801 km² and presently has a population of approximately 1 million inhabitants, distributed in four districts (Joaquim Egídio, Sousas, Barão Geraldo, and Nova Aparecida) and hundreds of quarters. Such economic and social vigor, brought in special to increase its work population, has allowed Campinas to consist as a metropolitan region of São Paulo polo, formed by 19 cities and a population of about 2.33 million inhabitants (6.31% of the State’s  population).
