Neutron-based techniques, such as Small Angle Neutron Scattering, Neutron Diffraction, Inelastic Neutron Scattering, Neutron Reflectometry and Imaging are extremely powerful tools that probe the structure and dynamics of matter in great detail. Due to the largely different nature and relative strength of distinct interactions of neutrons and x-rays, neutron research complements in many aspects the research performed with synchrotron radiation. In fact, most of the countries playing a major role in science, such as United States, Canada, England, Japan, Australia, and several members of European Community show parallel and strongly complementary programs to develop and support research using neutrons and synchrotron radiation. In Brazil, the project of a new multipurpose research reactor (RMB) has received a positive sign of the government, and is starting to be developed by the Brazilian Nuclear Energy Commission (CNEN). This is a unique opportunity to bring neutron science to the reach of the Brazilian scientific community.

The purpose of this mini-workshop is to bring together the community of synchrotron users who are potentially interested to use neutron techniques to boost their research. The present status and perspectives of neutron-based research throughout the world will be analysed and discussed. Finally, the possible actions by the scientific community to support the use of RMB for neutron research will be debated.

The workshop will take place at the Hotel Premium Norte in the afternoon of February 23, 2011.

Registration period ends on 10/february and the confirmation of registration will be made by e-mail on 11/february.

The registration is free of charge, but the partcipant should pay the expense with food, transportation and/or lodging.

Invited speakers: Alex Lacerda (Los Alamos Neutron Science Center), Sérgio Gama (Unifesp), Mateus Cardoso (LNLS), Fabiano Yokaichiya (LNLS), Cris Adriano (IFGW/Unicamp), Heloísa Nunes Bordallo (HZB, Berlin).
