Young Research Award 2023

Following the PhD Thesis Award of 2021 and Masters Thesis Award 2022, the LNLS Users Group (LNLSUG) will organize in 2023 the LNLSUG Young Researcher Award to recognize outstanding research work using LNLS facilities.

Nomination submission

To be eligible for the 2023 Young Researcher Award, the candidate must satisfy the following criteria:

  1. The candidate must have obtained his/her PhD degree after January 1st 2013.
  2. The candidate must have performed outstanding research beyond the material found in his/her PhD work, using the LNLS facilities.
  3. All candidates agree to present a short talk on November 08th – 09th 2023 during the 33rd RAU/LNLS, if requested.
  4. The winner agrees to present a ~40-min online talk at the LNLS Users group Seminar series about their thesis work on a date to be defined later.
  5. The nomination documentation must be complete and submitted on time.

Participation conditions

To participate, the candidate should send the following documents to the e-mail address usersgroup@lnls.br by no later than September 1st 2023:

  1. Signed cover letter, stating full name of the candidate, personal ID number, and present institution. A short description of the research and main results should be included, highlighting the importance of those obtained at LNLS.
  2. Proof of PhD degree.
  3. Copy of personal ID (RG, passport, etc).
  4. PDF copy of all published, accepted, or submitted papers related to the work performed within LNLS facilities after PhD.
  5. Statement that the candidate agrees to present a short talk on November 08th – 09th 2022 during the 33rd RAU/LNLS, if requested, and a ~40-min online talk at the LNLS Users group Seminar series about their work on a later date to be defined, in case of winning the prize.
  6. The candidate must be a member of the LNLS Users Group by the time of submission (how to become a member)

In case the above documentation exceeds 10Mb in total, the candidate should provide a link for download.

Selection process

The scientific production of the candidates will be evaluated by members of the LNLS Users Committee.

The evaluation guideline criteria are:

The quality and impact of the work within the context of the field.

The importance of the results obtained at LNLS in supporting the main conclusions of the work.

If pre-selected, the candidate will be requested to present a short talk on November 08th – 09th 2023 during the 33rd RAU/LNLS. The quality of this presentation will be part of the candidacy evaluation. The list of pre-selected candidates for the talk will be available at the LNLSUG website by no later than September 29th 2023. All candidates will be also informed by email of the result of the pre-selection.

The pre-selected candidates may receive financial support to attend the RAU meeting and deliver his/her talk in person, if funds are available, otherwise the candidate will be given the opportunity to present the talk remotely (online).

Decision and award

The decision will be announced during the closing session of the 33rd RAU/LNLS, November 09th 2023, and published on the LNLSUG webpage.

The selected researcher will be contacted for further arrangements of the online talk at the LNLS Users group Seminar series about the award-winning work.

The award includes a R$ 5.000,00 monetary prize (before taxes) and a certificate. It should be noted that the award is a recognition and not a remuneration for the work done.

Master’s Thesis Award 2022

Nomination submission

To be eligible for the 2022 award, the Master’s Thesis and candidate must satisfy the following criteria:

1. The research performed by the candidate at LNLS facilities must be key for the main conclusions of the Master’s thesis.

2. The Master’s thesis must have been successfully defended between January 1st 2019 and July 31st 2022.

3. All candidates agree to present a 10-min online talk on November 08th – 09th 2022 during the 32nd RAU/LNLS, if requested.

4. The winner agrees to present a 40-min online talk at the LNLS Users group Seminar series about their thesis work on a date to be defined later.

5. The nomination documentation must be complete and submitted on time.

The list of pre-selected candidates for the talk will be available at the LNLSUG website by no later than October 04th 2022 October 11th, 2022. All candidates will be also informed by email of the result of the pre-selection.

In 2021, the LNLS Users Group (LNLSUG) organized for the first time the LNLSUG PhD Thesis Award to recognize outstanding research work using LNLS facilities.
